What’s Hot on The Block- Cloudy Nueve

Yoooo, this is Lul Bulma and welcome to the first entry for 88.1 WKNC’s; “Hot on the Block”. In this segment we take a look into the underground scene and see what local artists are up to. Today’s entry is on the New Bern native and upcoming star; Cloudy Nueve. Known for his original sound and vibrant flow, he has made impressions that have landed him features on platforms such as Lyrical Lemonade and Elevator Magazine. He is originally from New Bern though he now resides in Raleigh and has gotten over 30k views on a single hit. Following the release of his 3-single EP, Cloudy With a Chance, he released Cloudy With a Chance Pt. 2, a dynamic continuum of the same rhythmic flow that has gotten him the audience that he has now.

Obviously, Cloud has been up to a lot in recently yet, he has so much more in store.

Though he tends to only do collabs that are run by his camp, he is now working on collabs out the ass. As Cloud is often seen in junction with local rap group, The Lost Gen (otherwise known as TLG), he most recent collabs include artists; Brody J, who is featured on Cloudy With a Chance Pt. 2 on the track; Break:  https://soundcloud.com/cloudynueve/break-feat-brody-j?in=cloudynueve/sets/cwac,

Emilio Zapata, who he joins on the single; Taki:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkWoZK_0iEU

And Jaheal, as seen in his most viewed hit, Hostage: https://soundcloud.com/cloudynueve/hostage-feat-jaheal-prod-jag-1.

As for what the future holds, he plans to work on a collab EP with Jaheal which will likely highlight  the complementary relationship between Cloud’s dynamic pitch range and Jaheals steady flow to create a storytelling masterpiece. He furthermore plans to release new music with local artists; Sangstaa, Stephen Jailon, and Les the Genius as they all compliment his melodic style. Nevertheless, he also plans to start collabing with the more urban local underground scene of Raleigh consisting of artists like; YSB Sunny, female rap group; BBO and, Marlee Savage, all artists who maintain the same “from the trenches” theme that Cloud carries throughout his music.

In all, I’d have to say that Cloudy Nueve is one of my top five favorite local artists. I bumped Cloudy With a Chance for a week after it came out (Faded Letterman is my fav: https://soundcloud.com/cloudynueve/sets/cloudy-with-a-chance) and I stand by my belief that if he doesn’t get famous sometime soon, the industry is rigged. He ranks top three in originality because of his raw sound, which is most easily observed through the broadness of his vocal range and extensity of  his timbre (Listen to Noddin Off and Repeat to hear exactly what I’m talking about). Lastly, I encourage y’all to look out for the From the Durt music video being released on Elevator Magazine’s website sometime soon and check out Cloudy Nueve on all social media platforms (Twitter) @cloudynueve, (Instagram) @cloudyxnueve. Tune in next week to see what’s hot on the block.

New Album Review

Album Review: Whitechapel – The Valley

What’s that sound? Oh, that’s the sound of me fangirling because Whitechapel dropped another banger of an album. This is Whitechapel’s eighth studio album and it is the perfect combination of chunky, dark riffs, and melodic melodies. The Valleyis much different than previous records. The sound of Whitechapel is continuing to evolve and their newest album shows that change.

Now, I’m not gonna lie, I am a BIG fan. But putting my personal opinions aside, this album is an absolute masterpiece. The Valleyhas the heaviness, gutturals, and intensity of earlier records (Somatic Defilement, 2007), but the album incorporates melodic death metal riffs. Along with Phil Bozeman’s powerful voice, the blend of these three elements makes an album that is a force to be reckoned with.

There is something for everyone to like, here. If you like the “old school” sound of Whitechapel with dark riffs and deep vocals (with some badass gutturals), then Brimstone is the song for you. It has this groove that you can’t help but bang your head to. Forgiveness is Weakness and We Are One are also songs that stick to Whitechapel’s original sound, but add a few components to make them new and exciting. There are also some songs that are heavy as hell, but still have those grooves and melodies. Black Bear is an example of this particular sound that Whitechapel used on this record. When a Demon Defiles a Witch also shows this sound, yet another element is added: clean vocals. I know some people don’t like clean vocals in metal, but Bozeman’s voice is just as good regardless of if he is growling, screaming, or “clean” singing. You can hear more of his Cory Taylor singing ass on Hickory Creek (which is all clean vocals, but still heavy), and Third Depth.

Another thing that makes this album great are the lyrics. Bozeman said in an interview that this album is based on his childhood and what he has experienced. The lyrics are dark and Bozeman recounts his tales with moving, often grim persistence. You can hear and feel the emotions within the music itself. If you get the chance, listen toThe Valleyand read the lyrics, and become immersed in the experience that is Whitechapel.

I believe that this is Whitechapel’s best record they have created. It’s an album that I can listen to when I am in any mood. I can also listen to this record when I’m getting ready, walking around campus, doing schoolwork, driving, or when I’m just hanging out.

Favorite song(s): Forgiveness is Weakness, Brimstone, and Black Bear

Stay Metal,

THE SAW

Her’s killed in car crash

Only 20 days after seeing them preform live in Brooklyn, both members of the indie-rock group based out of Liverpool, Her’s, were tragically killed in a car crash. Stephen Fitzpatrick on vocals and guitar and Audun Laading on bass guitar and backing vocals, brought such amazing presences to the stage that night. They made it obvious how much they appreciated their fans, tossing fruit out into the crowd! The entire crowd yelled “hello!” to Stephen’s girlfriend, who could not make it that night.

Rest in peace Stephen and Audun. Thank you for leaving such an amazing mark on the world. You will forever be missed.

Her’s song suggestions:

“Mannie’s Smile” – Invitation to Her’s

“Love on the line (call now)” – Invitation to Her’s

“Blue Lips” – Invitation to Her’s

“Dorothy” – Songs of Her’s
