Phian interviewed Urban Soil last Thursday before they played Local Band Local Beer at Tir Na Nog Irish Pub in Raleigh.

In the closing hour of the live broadcast from Hopscotch, The Mattador had the opportunity to interview Dent May. The songwriter from Mississippi stopped by to chat about his unique sound, writing process, influences, and what makes a show awesome for the folks on stage. The set he went on to play at Deep South that night was stripped down compared to his albums, but it was all still super dance-able. Check out the interview.

WKNC’s The Lounge Presents – Free Cake for Every Creature
Lo-fi twee gang Free Cake For Every Creature played a quick session in The Lounge before their show at Slim’s on August 30th, 2014. The stop in Raleigh was the very last date of their extensive tour that led them from their home in New York to the west coast and eventually the lower Atlantic. One of the stops included the actual feminist book store featured in Portlandia.

On Saturday afternoon, after playing two shows the night before during Hopscotch 2014, Palehound came and talked with DJ Nasty Nate at Wristband City. They’re a Pavement-esque indie rock band off Exploding in Sound (a new record label with a really solid catalog worth keeping an eye on). During the interview we talk about frontwoman Ellen Kempner’s musical mentors and who the band was most excited to see at Hopscotch. We discussed a lot more too. Check out the interview.

Yes, it’s real. The international event, Cassette Store Day, will take place in part in Raleigh at Nice Price Books and Records on Hillsborough Street.
Much like Record Store Day, Cassette Store Day will be a day long event where record—err, tape labels will release hundreds of cassettes for tape deck toting music lovers to purchase. Before you write this off as being some ironic fad that will never catch on, you might want to take a look at the list of cassettes that will be released. Artists that have a cassette coming out on Saturday include Cloud Nothings, Best Coast, and even Raleigh’s own Ghostt Bllonde.
So go ahead and hit up your parents for their old Walkman, or get on Craigslist and find a cassette player before Saturday!
