DJ Dragonfly’s June Favorites

In a world where taste changes all the time, even day to day, I think it’s pretty cool to document the current favorites every now and then.  Looking back at these old favorites can make us see the growth we have had as people.  Another upside to these records is we might rediscover some gems that we might have forgotten about.

I am someone who loves to share and exchange music.  I love discovering new artists and seeing who my friends like to listen to.  Everyone’s music taste is different, I would find it difficult to believe that there could be two people with the exact same taste.

I love to expose people to new music and to my favorites and so I have made a playlist of my current favorite songs.  I have to say there is some variety and I like to think that my music is fairly well-rounded but that is up to my readers to decide.  Some of these songs have explicit content, so fair warning to everyone.

Interview with Prince of Eden: Have You Seen Him?

Universally known as Prince of Eden, Aaron Tebay, based in Fullerton, CA, has been steadily gaining attention for his unique blend of atmospheric production, emotional lyrics, and genre-blurring sound. Drawing from a range of influences and experiences, his music invites listeners into a reflective poetic world where they’ll find themselves absent-mindedly tapping their feet to his upbeat tunes. In this interview, I sit down with Aaron to talk about his creative process, the inspirations behind his work, and what’s next for him as an artist.

Lyrical Influences

Prince of Eden’s collection of albums and singles is laden with stories ranging in depth and specificity. The feared drug overdose of a friend, a dragon warrior, and an 8-bit cowboy are not typical subject matters in music. So what inspires his lyrical content?

“Perspective and meeting people with specific problems that maybe I don’t necessarily have or merge with…And then in the same light, just the opposite side of the spectrum, it’s seeing what lights people up. Seeing somebody who really enjoys Christmas, and then seeing another person who’s in an insane amount of debt, and the last thing they want to do is buy their family gifts because they can’t afford it. There are so many different ways to see emotion. So that’s another thing– I try to keep my songs relatively broad so that whoever’s listening can apply it. I’m also influenced by whatever I’m going through and I’m going to hope that somebody enjoys it or somebody meshes with it too and it applies to them.”

This Too Shall Pass

Having a hard time? Finding no joy in your favorite things anymore? Feel like things just keep getting worse and worse? If you feel like any of these things is accurate, you should know that it’s okay.  Sometimes, everything goes wrong and there’s nothing you can do about it.  I know it isn’t always a comfort but these things happen sometimes.

If any of my readers are anything like me, then good and bad things usually happen in big clumps.  I can have weeks or even months of almost nothing bad happening and suddenly a storm of bad luck rains down on me.  Likewise the other way; sometimes I just have consistently bad luck and suddenly the sun comes out and I have a slew of good things coming my way.

How Do You Use Music?

Everyone is different: tastes, habits, needs, wants etc.  It stands to reason that everyone does things differently and treats things differently.  Music is no exception.  So how do different people use music in their lives?

Some people use music for a soundtrack to their lives while others use it as background noise and I know people who don’t really even like music.

I personally use music as a soundtrack to my life.  I carefully pick and queue exactly what I need to make the moment feel a specific way and make sure it fits the vibe.  Sometimes I let my playlists shuffle and I get a surprise but it almost always is still part of the soundtrack style I strive for.

If I have a bomb fit on and I feel really good about myself, I’ll usually have music in my earbuds that reflects that.  Same with if I’m driving to campus on a rainy autumn morning.  I need the music I listen to to reflect how I feel and how I am as a person.  This is what makes life rich for me.

Anniversary Tours, Album Tours, are they different?

Once, while driving to a venue whose name I can’t recall, my friend turned to me and began to say “I wish Glass Animals would perform more songs from How To Be a Human Being.” I agreed with her idea, not just because “How To Be A Human Being” is my favorite Glass Animals album, but because many artists have begun going on tours to commemorate the anniversary of an album’s release. Typically, artists perform newer tracks in order to promote their newer albums, yet some choose to play work that is almost exclusively older. If you’re a fan of an artist who hasn’t released new music in years yet is currently on tour, it’s likely an anniversary tour!
