EOT116 Raleigh Economy 2/26/13

In honor of N.C. State’s  anniversary, the university hosted different speakers and scholars on spurring innovation in the workplace here in the Triangle area, and the role that N.C. State plays in spurring growth.

Recently, a controversy has broken out over the alleged mishandling of cases of reported rape and other sexual assault crimes on the campus of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Deondre’ Jones did a little research into this worrying problem.

Raleigh Rock Camp for Girls to be held at Saint Mary’s School!

Girls Rock North Carolina is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering girls and women to become confident and engaged members of their community through creative expression. The program uses music as a way to build community and self-esteem by centering around creativity, confidence, and collaboration. The organization’s biggest program is Rock Camp for Girls. The camp is a one week summer event in which campers between the ages 9-16 are instructed in an instrument of their choice, form bands, and write original music with their peers. This year the event is the week of July 22nd at Saint Mary’s School. Activities between band practices include attending workshops on songwriting, self defense, DIY, zine making, deejaying, body confidence, and more. During their time at camp, the girls are mentored by musicians, educators, and activists. The week concludes with a showcase at King’s in downtown Raleigh on Friday, July 26th at 6:00 pm.

 

 

 

 

No musical background or instrument are necessary to participate! If you sign up your girls before March 1st, then the $10 registration fee is waived!

College is a time when young people have been known to get active. And occasionally, sometimes that activity can… bear fruit. And if you’re a guy hoping to put that off for a couple of more years, then you might want to listen up. Deondre’ has more.

Our very own Jasmine Shepherd was recently one of the hosts of a charity date auction, where bidders got the chance to bid on dates with different participants.

As a rule, I try to keep personal opinions regarding serious issues off the air. But recently our new governor has outlined some of the changes he hopes to implement with regards to our state’s higher education funding.

Free Bus From Durham to Double Barrel Benefit

The Bridge Bus, a nighttime shuttle connecting Durham and Raleigh, will be offering FREE rides both to and from Double Barrel Benefit for all our listeners who would rather not make the drive. While normally at a minor expense, The Bridge Bus has graciously offered their services to WKNC to help ensure that every listener who wants to attend Double Barrel can make it. EOT112 Coach’s Corner 1/15/13

Dr. Brand Fortner is a physics professor here at NC State. Gene Zhirnov recently spoke with him about where he came from and how he wound up here.

James McLay is the New Zealand ambassador to the United Nations. He is currently visiting N.C. State, giving talks about the importance of international relations and New Zealand’s place on the World stage. Jake was recently given the opportunity to have lunch with the ambassador.

Three new statues are currently in the planning stages for the campus Coach’s Corner. If erected, these would commemorate three N.C. State coaches of legendary status.

WKNC now has for sale pint glasses. The glass, which features the lovely logo of WKNC is at the bargain price of $5. Be sure to pick yours up before they run out. They will be available at Double Barrel Benefit X February 1 and February 2 at the Pour House, and the day party at Tir Na nOg on February 2.  You can also find them at any other event that WKNC can be found. For those that can’t wait to get their hands on one, you can pick them up at WKNC’s offices in 343 Witherspoon Student Center only during normal business hours, 9 a.m and 5 p.m.

EOT111 Best of 2012 12/11/12

This show took some time to showcase our best segments of the 2012 calendar year!

Grant Buckner spent his spring break in Chicago, working with residents in some of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods. Here is his report from the March 19th episode.

Liberty in North Korea is an advocacy group that travels the country on behalf of the oppressed people of North Korea. Here is Deondre’s story from March 27th.

The North Carolina State Rocketry team competed in a National competition to get a rocket one mile into the air. Some listeners might remember Nick Savage. Here is the conversation he had with the team from the April 10th episode.

In that period just after the peak of Summer, right before the hush of Fall creeps over campus, you can always count on the farmer’s market opening up for the first time. The first time you see it open, you know the school year has begun. Here’s Gene Zhirnov from August 28th.

Last August, the world lost a great pioneer in Neil Armstrong. Here from the August 28th episode, is Andrew Eichen’s reflection.

Last August, N.C. State tried to break a North Carolina record by donating one thousand, two hundred, and fifty pints of blood in honor of North Carolina state’s one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary. Although the university ultimately fell short of its goal, Jake decided to record the experience of giving blood for the first time.

EOT110 Human Trafficking 11/27/12

Nubian Message is the premier African American student newspaper here at NC State. And this year, it turns twenty! Jake recently sat down with the newspaper’s editor Kierra Leggett to discuss the newspaper’s history and future.

It’s always important to promote local music, and WKNC is particularly good at that. This week, Grant Buckner spoke with the local band, Eagledown.

Modern slavery is a topic that perhaps many don’t dwell on too often, but it is a problem. And not just abroad. If you know what to look for, you can sometimes find slavery right here in North Carolina. Gene Zhirnov has more.

We’re at the height of flu season right now, and  as is often the case with large groups of people spending lots of time near each other, it can often be easy to get sick, and getting over an illness is not fun, as Deondre’ can attest to. It got him thinking, how can one safeguard against getting sick, or what should you do if you fall ill? With exams around the corner, that’s the last thing anybody needs.
