Family Bike Release Show at Jellybean’s 5/31/15

The WKNC team decided to head down to Wilmington for the release show of Family Bike’s debut album Everything You Own Is Anagrammed.

Family Bike members Karl Kuehn, also from the local favorite Museum Mouth, and Taylor Haag, the ecstatic drummer, set the bar high for all release shows to come by hosting it at Jellybean’s, the super skate center located in both the Triangle and Wilmington.

If you can rent it out for your kid’s seventh birthday party, why not for your album release party?

It had been years since I went to a skating rink and climbed into those beautiful, beige rental skates. Everything was exactly as I remembered. The smell of disinfectant, the lack of coordination coupled with the hard, unforgiving floor, and the iconic disco ball.

Astro Cowboy, another local favorite from Wilmington, opened the show with lead singer and guitarist Travis Harrington standing a few inches taller in his rental skates. Behind him was Kameron Vann, the drummer for the group, who unfortunately could not wear skates while performing, since drumming and skating do not mix.

Once Family Bike hit the stage, Karl Kuehn started off with the nostalgic game of “Red Light Green Light,” one game almost everyone has played in their childhood. Family Bike played the latest off their album, including the bangers “Idiot Boy” and “Places.”

Halfway through their set, things took an interesting turn. Travis Harrington, while proving his proficiency in rocking by his opening set, had not yet perfected his rolling and tumbled into Taylor Haag’s drum set. This was right after Kuehn introduced “a song about doing shrooms,” otherwise known as “Dylan’s Room.”

I like to think this accident set the mood for the whole evening. The mood was laidback and embraced the local scene. Family Bike played a great show with tons of local support around them.

The setting of the venue was appropriate for harboring a carefree, inclusive atmosphere. The skating rink is for times of celebrating achievements, and like a seven year old’s birthday, Family Bike deserves all of the praise.

Naked Naps | Museum Mouth | Astro Cowboy Show

So last Saturday I went out to Kings to see Astro Cowboy, Museum Mouth, and Naked Naps. In short; it was awesome. This was the first time that I had seen Astro Cowboy since they added a bassist to the lineup and the difference was amazing. Their sound was well rounded, their playing was tight, and their cover of “Tonight” was … smashing.

Next Museum Mouth sauntered onto stage. Their performance made me even more excited for when they play Double Barrel Benefit on February 14th at Cat’s Cradle, and I didn’t think that was even possible. The band’s front man Karl Kuehn gave a quick shout out to the Lounge before launching into a raucous rendition of “Crocodile”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7l0vnZclzg&t=4m21s

There was also much talk of a Museum Mouth/Naked Naps split to be released soon.  When Naked Naps took to the stage excitement in the crowd was high. They played all of their songs –all of them! This made the requests being shouted out unnecessary, but still fun to do. It was defiantly not “like and awkward first date” like the band said one review had claimed them to be.

So yeah I guess all in all my Saturday  was pretty good.

A Night at Local 506 with Lowell and Generationals

Let me just start out by saying this was a fantastic night. Last Tuesday night The Mattador and I drove to Chapell Hill, NC to go see Generationals at the Local 506, located on the further end of Franklin Street nearest to Carrboro. Neither of us had been before, and were pleasantly surprised by the layout and size of the music venue. As we arrived, we caught the last few songs of the opening act Lowell. With her pastel clothes and glittering face crystals, she bounced around on stage to catchy beats, eventually entering the crowd and dancing with concert goers. There was a short break, and then Generationals took the stage. Playing their entire set with a colorful light show made the music that much better. The crowd danced and sang along with old favorites like “Put A Light On,” but also to new beats like “Black Lemon” and “Gold Silver Diamond.” At one point Ted even began climbing on the front stage speakers, still playing his electric guitar. After the show, we headed back to the merch table. The Mattador picked up a Generationals cassette, and I picked up each band’s newest LP.  We chatted with Lowell for awhile and took some awesome pics (see below). She also drew me some art on the back of my new record slip. We made our way back to the stage to meet up with Grant and Ted. We chatted outside for a bit, took more pictures, and even got them to record an awesome liner for WKNC (tune in to the station to hear it sometime). It was a great night and a great show, and can be summed up in one overarching statement: them’s good people.

T0W3RS LP Release Show with GHOSTT BLLONDE and DADDY ISSUES- Kings Barcade

 T0W3RS

GHOSTT BLLONDE

DADDY ISSUES

NOVEMBER 22

T0W3RS, GHOSTT BLLONDE, and DADDY ISSUES played a sold out show at Kings Barcade in Raleigh for the release of T0W3RS’ new EP “TL;DR.” The three acts killed it, and the night ended with a few of the band members in T0W3RS covering three Blink-182 songs to top it all off.
