Get Down With Summer Reggae Fest 2009

Summer Reggae Fest 2009 featuring Dub Addis, Mickey Mills & Steel, and Tony Dread & Give Thanks Band will be on the scene at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC this Friday, August 14.

Here at WKNC’s Strictly Reggae, we do our best to keep an eye out for great local acts, and when I found these tickets in the studio it was a definite eye catcher. This shows promises to be a hit as Dub Addis, one of the best roots reggae bands on the east coast, will perform. Dub Addis has roots in Ethiopia, the holy land of reggae music and Rastafarian culture, so it is fitting that their sound is authentic and rich with African rhythm and roots music. Having seen them live before, I can promise they will not disappoint. Mickey Mills, a legendary steel drummer, also brings weight to the line-up. With a long history in reggae music you now have a chance to see true musicians at work. Congratulations to Greg Chase who won a pair of tickets last week. Be sure to stay tuned for your chance to snag a pair.

LA Riots in Raleigh, a dancin’ riot that is

LA Riots, a DJ duo who have heated up the West Coast club scene, are bringing the heat back to NC.  Deep Cover Movement is presenting LA Riots this Thursday in Raleigh at Solas (perhaps not the underground, warehouse dance-party location that WKNC Afterhours listeners dream of, but exciting none the less) and then following up with a Friday, Greensboro performance at the Green Street Club (see the Deep Cover myspace for full details).  The boys have been turning up the heat with remixing dance, and not so dance, faves, ranging from such artists as Hot Chip, VHS or Beta, and Crystal Castles to Weezer.  LA Riots have been running full steam into 2009 after touring with MSTRKRFT in 2008 and being signed to Fools Gold Records, co-owned lable of Kayne West’s longtime DJ, A-Trak.

To get ready for the party, you can check out their Vol. 1 of remixes from their myspace here: PARTY TIME

And for their get-stuck-in-your-head-for-so-long-it-drives-you-insane track, check out this:  Kill Bill

6/4 – Local Beer Local Band Night – Regina Hexaphone and the StarsExplode

As most of you all know, WKNC and Tir Na Nog do this thing called Local Beer Local Band Night.  Each Thursday at Tir Na Nog we have a free show with great local bands and great local brews.  This week’s line up is Regina Hexaphone and the Stars Explode.  Also, tune in to 88.1 at 5pm on Thursday, as I will be interviewing Regina Hexaphone.

Here’s a qoute from the Independent Weekly about Regina Hexaphone:

“The rustling sun-kissed beauty and easy charm of Regina Hexaphone’s folky pop echo the sweet, generous vibe of frontwoman Sara Bell. Just as a wayward smile from someone attractive can brighten your day, nothing feels quite as welcoming as Hexaphone’s soothing sonic embrace. A preview of their forthcoming album, Into Your Sleeping Heart, is impressive, indeed, from the nomadic surf-inflected pop of "Waiting for the Wind” to the Dresden-bound gypsy bounce of “The Fortyniner.” Elsewhere, they work in a hazy, pillowy drift of receding detail, like a watercolor pulling away and over the horizon.“ –Chris Parker, Independent Weekly

"The Stars Explode is the new rock band led by Doug Edmunds, co-founding member/songwriter/drummer/vocalist for 90s rockpop underground wonders, Gladhands, and most recently the drummer for Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies. The Stars Explode builds on Edmunds’ musical legacy while looking squarely to the future. With influences ranging from the rugged British rock of Paul Weller to the loud guitar pop of the Posies to latter-day singer-songwriters like Grant-Lee Phillips, Jon Brion, and Rhett Miller, Edmunds’ new band offers up a delicious blend of musical offerings.”–the Stars Explode’s Myspace
