DJ Ones Five Music Facts from the past week

1. The super-group Them Crooked Vultures have announced their self-titled, debut album will be released next month. The group which features David Grohl (The Foo Fighters), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), and John Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) are scheduled to tour the UK in December after their album releases.  (via NME)

2. Just six months after the release of its last album, Eels has announced that its follow up to “Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire” entitled “End Times” will be released January 19 of next year.  (via Pitchfork)

3. The London based ensemble The Rakes has split up and canceled their upcoming tour or the UK and the United States. In a statement released by the band, it explained, “If we can’t give it everything then we won’t do it. That was the rule we set ourselves from day one. After much deliberation we have come to the shared conclusion that we can’t give it 100 per cent any more and regret to announce that The Rakes are calling it a day.” In the same statement it concluded, “We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to write music together and perform around the world. Genuinely, thanks for the good times… that was one hell of a party! But now, we really must get some sleep.” Fans who have purchased tickets will be fully refunded. (via NME)

4. After the bassist and drummer of Jay Reatard’s band quit earlier this month, it has been announced that Jay Reatard has already lined up drummer Jacob Elving and bassist Anders Thode (both of which are from the punk band Cola Freaks. Reatard is planning to follow up with a European tour and a North American tour. They will be playing in Chapel Hill at the Local 506 on December 1. (via Matador Records)

5. Singer/songwriter Andrew Bird has announced he will be playing five acoustic shows set in various churches this December. The artist, who is currently touring in support of his most recent album “Noble Beast”. When asked about the church based shows Bird responded,“What I hope to do with these shows is adapt my music completely to the atmosphere of the space and the season.” (via NME)

MARS VOLTA SHOW at the DISCO RODEO- CANCELED

Listeners, if you were pumped for the Mars Volta show at the Disco Rodeo tonight, well unfortunately the show has been canceled. There is no official word on why the show has been canceled yet.  If you’re still looking for other awesome shows tonight to attend, be sure to check out our Rock Report.

EOT09 State Fair 10/19/09

This week’s Eye on the Triangle decided to give listeners a sneak peek at this year’s Pack Howl Act, but as always, our EOT team gave you the regular segments you are used to as well.

NEWS:
Evan Garris gave listeners an update on the balloon boy hoax, the interim executive director of the Alumni Association after Lennie Barton’s firing, the H1N1 vaccine running out in Wake County and more.

SPORTS:
Derek Medlin, John Cooper Elias and Tyler Everett analyzed the Pack’s performance against Boston College.

VIP:
In this week’s VIP, in honor of the North Carolina State Fair being in town, DJ Chris Cioffi took listeners on his journey to enjoy his State Fair experience, spending as little money as possible. He quickly found out that going for free was not a viable option. This year’s State Fair included a lot of representation from N.C. State, including an appearance from the infamous Hillsborough Street Barrel Monster, ice cream from N.C. State’s Food Science Department, a look at how to milk a cow from N.C. State’s Animal Science Club and more.

HOMECOMING:
As promised, Homecoming Chair Adam Compton came on as a guest to Eye on the Triangle to officially announce the Homecoming Pack Howl Act. We talked to him about Homecoming 2009 events and how they compare to previous years’ events, and then let him explain the Pack Howl act, which is NOT going to be a band this year. If you haven’t read Special K’s blog post or listened to the show, we won’t ruin the surprise for you.

COMMUNITY CANVAS:
Mike Alston interviewed Megan Gulledge for this week’s Community Canvas on her artwork, after reading about Gulledge in Goodnight Raleigh.  Gulledge has an opening at First Friday at the Busy Bee. Here is an excerpt of Gulledge’s bio from her Web site: Certain experiences in life change the way you see the world.  When I was in college I traveled to Ireland with eleven other art students and two professors.  We were required to keep journals to document our experiences through writing and drawing.  One of the more interesting techniques that I learned from keeping a journal is to almost remove yourself a level, step back from what you are so immersed in for the sake of capturing it in a more effective way.  A result of that trip was a new perspective on life, an obsession for moments.

WOLFPACKER OF THE WEEK:
This week’s Wolfpacker of the Week was Zach Schnell, a junior in environmental technology and member of the Wolfpack Environmental Association. He sat down with Jacob Downey to talk about sustainability on campus.

SOUNDBYTES:
Student Media Photographer Matt Moore went around campus and talked to students about what they think of the proposed government soda tax. The tax is intended to help pay for health care reform and combat obesity.

WAR OF THE WORLDS Live Broadcast Halloween Night!

This Halloween night, the Martians are invading the airwaves and striking terror in the hearts of WKNC listeners everywhere.

This live, localized adaptation of the Mercury Theater production of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds is the brainchild of Damian Maddalena, who, as La Barba Rossa, hosts WKNC’s Saturday morning 60s and 70s program, Mystery Roach.  Maddalena, along with his Two Cabbage Radio Players, have worked diligently to season the science fiction classic with local flavor.  Sound effects will be performed by Brian Donohoe, member of the local band Starmount.  AV Geek Skip Elsheimer lends his voice to the production, along with a motley crew of WKNC Djs, NCSU students and community members who share Maddalena’s vision and taste for the unusual: DJs Alex Steinbaugh, Caitlin Cauley, Jacob Downey, Liz Cervantes, and Mike Gray, along with grad student Dave Fallest and Magic Babies keyboardist Brandon Whitesell.

The invasion will take place at 7 p.m. on October 31.  You can get ready for Halloween debauchery to the sounds of the Triangle’s destruction, only on 88.1 FM or streaming online.

Steve Wilson Band interview this Friday, Oct. 23!

This Friday, October 23 between 9 and 11 a.m., DJ K-Line and myself will have the Raleigh-based Steve Wilson Band in the studio for an interview and a live performance.  They will be promoting their show coming up this Saturday at The Black Flower and discussing what they’ve been up to since I saw them the last time they played the venue.

Simple “WKNC Sessions Live” Release Show

This Friday, October 23, indie trio Simple will release their new EP titled “WKNC Sessions Live.”  This is by no means a coincidence; we here at sessions@KNC recorded this very EP in the Caldwell Lounge back in May.

You should be pumped for a few reasons:

1. This thing rocks.

2. The show and CD are both FREE (but you’ll probably get a little nod toward a donation fund).

3. The songs on the CD are slightly different from what you heard online; they’ve been mastered and sound even better!

The show is at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill Friday at 10 p.m.  You’ll also see guest groups Nathan Oliver and Wild Wild Geese; two more bands with totally unique, cool sounds!

Also, Simple will be interviewed during The Local Beat on the same day at 5 p.m. on WKNC 88.1 FM.  Listen in!

Still want to see The Mars Volta?

As most of our loyal listeners know, the Mars Volta show at the Disco Rodeo has been a highly coveted giveaway for the month of October. On several occasions, our deejays have feared the WKNC phone system would literally explode due to the high influx of callers. However, like a big bully tangling a nerdy kid’s lunch money over his head, many listeners have come away empty handed.
