Fridays on the Lawn (Today)

WKNC’s Fridays on the Lawn concert series has been bringing local music to NC State’s campus for years, but it’s mostly been indie rock. To ignore a whole scene that’s been making major moves in the Triangle for the past couple years would be a shame. So this Friday, WKNC will hold its first FOTL focused on local hip-hop in a while. The lineup includes up-and-comer Freedom Infinite, the eclectic Vanilla the Hun and the crowd-pleasing Defacto Thezpian.

The three acts were chosen because of their diverse sounds. Freedom Infinite uses a trap rhyme scheme that holds up with traditional hip-hop sound. Vanilla the Hun is making music unlike anything else on the scene, with a fusion of funk, rock and hip-hop. The headliner, Defacto Thezpian, is one of the most charismatic underground rappers in the Triangle. He has a background in theater, which mixed with his smooth delivery, creates an experience for the audience rather than just an emcee spitting rhymes.

Fridays on the Lawn will be held on Harris Field in front of Witherspoon Student Center from 5–7 p.m. Admission will be free and food will be catered by Neomonde. Come and enjoy some nice weather and an opportunity to hear some extra dope local music.

WolfTrax Music Group Presents: Night Vision EDM Party

Gather ‘round, everyone, for a sick night of EDM. By that of course, we mean Electronic Dance Music, not Elephants Doing the Moonwalk. We understand that those are easily confused, and would like to clarify that there will be no circus animals present at the event. We know, we were disappointed too. On the plus side, there will be some pretty awesome DJs, and admission is free. Not only are they great DJs, but they’re also local independent artists right here from NC State! What could be better than that? Well, obviously moonwalking elephants, but we don’t have those.

The event will be held March 22nd in the Talley Coastal Ballroom on NC State’s main campus. Doors and show are at 8pm. Our artists include:

Asteroid AfterParty (8pm – 8:25pm)
Mystec (8:25pm – 8:50pm)
Xtals (8:50pm – 9:15pm)
Deadzone (9:15pm – 10pm)

Come out and support your local artists! This event is the second of its kind. With its success, we anticipate many more in the future.

Preview: Fridays on the Lawn (3/17/2016)

WKNC’s Fridays on the Lawn is a free concert, usually held on Harris Field in front of Witherspoon Student Center, but this week it will be inside Witherspoon in room 126. The event is a great way for students to get exposure to some up-and-coming artists in the North Carolina music scene. This week’s lineup is unique. It will feature all electronic artists and DJs: AWAY MSG, Oak City Slums, Drozy, and speedating.

AWAY MSG, Oak City Slums, and Drozy are part of Mega Monolith, a North Carolina art collective and electronic music label. AWAY MSG creates glitch pop with chiptune influence and relaxing sound collages. Oak City Slums’ music is sample-based and often hip-hop influenced, and recently he dropped a teaser for his forthcoming debut album, “Don’t Sleep Get Hype.” Drozy, from Durham, released their album “Gang Death” this year, which is synth-based, downtempo and also has some hip-hop influence. Speedating is a heavily-percussive electronic act that recently relocated to Raleigh from Boone, NC, and as a note of interest, a few years ago he performed at NC State College of Design’s annual bash alongside DJ Paypal.

Be sure to stop by Witherspoon Student Center room 126 tomorrow at 6pm for Fridays on the Lawn, and don’t miss WKNC’s next two Fridays on the Lawn on April 8th and 15th. Although this week’s concert is indoors, the next two will be out in front of the building, actually on the lawn! Don’t forget to tune into Afterhours on WKNC 88.1FM Tuesday and Wednesday nights for more new and noteworthy electronic music.

Preview: Museum Mouth with Kississippi, Superbody, and Body Games (Solo)

Kings Barcade – Saturday, January 16 at 9 pm

An incredible lineup is coming to Kings tonight!
Local faves Museum Mouth are headlining and are sure to bring the noise. One of my favorite aspects of the band is the instrumentation; Karl Kuehn plays drums and sings Museum Mouth’s emotive lyrics at a punk rock pace. Museum Mouth are getting ready for Double Barrel Benefit 13, then tour with Say Anything through April and May. They released a few new tracks late last year. I’m pumped to catch them for some of their last local shows this weekend and at DBB before they hit it big time. Speaking of Double Barrel (specifically, DBB alums), Dax Beaton from Body Games will be performing a solo set. This will be a unique set for anyone who’s seen Body Games before, since they usually perform with three members. We’ll have to see what Dax has in store, but if previous shows are any indication, it will be an awesome, danceable, and immersive audiovisual experience.

Linking these two seemingly disjoint acts will be Kississippi and Superbody. Described as popviolence, Philadelphia two-piece Kississippi plays impressively catchy rock grooves without overfilling their musical space. Paper Magazine named them in their list of Top Musicians Who Will Dominate 2016. This will be the second-to-last show of Kississippi’s winter tour, so they’re sure to impress. Superbody mixes nonsensical ideas (best exhibited in their video for “Call Me That”) with classic pop beats to create truly different but still addicting music. If you’re a fan of at least one of these artists, odds are you’ll be led to like the others through Kississippi’s and Superbody’s performances. I’m looking forward to learning more about electronic influences on music this weekend at the show. The lineup is great in that there is no obvious common thread through all four acts, but each artist fits into several genres and can be easily related to  one other.

Technician Preview for Fridays on the Lawn

source: Sunshine Face’s Facebook

This Friday, outside of Witherspoon Student Center, WKNC will be holding one of several of its long-running musical events, Fridays on the Lawn. Sunshine Faces from Chapel Hill and Mineral Girls from Charlotte will be playing; both bands are riding off the release of albums this year.

Sunshine Faces just recently released “Peaked,” their sophomore album, recorded completely in a dorm room. Their music has been described as lo-fi, but it is by no means thin-sounding. Their songs are expansive, swelling and even ethereal-sounding. At times, their music is reminiscent of The Cure, like on the song “Kissing Every Day,” a quick-tempo track with twangy guitar sounds and glistening synthesizers. At other times they sound like a shoegaze or twee pop band. Honestly though, they are not an easy band to pinpoint as they don’t tend to just one sound throughout an album. Some other tracks I’d recommend checking out from the band are “Of Asheville,” as well as the fan favorite, “Teenage Prayer.”

Mineral Girls released the totally solid album, “Cozy Body,” this spring. The lo-fi emo group has plenty of catchy melodies and harmonized guitars to spare. Brett Green’s distorted and distant vocals give their music a signature sound too. Some songs I’d recommend from these guys are “Was the Worst Thing That Ever Happened to Me” and “Nvr Ur Gf.”

With the forecast predicting warm weather and only a slight chance of rain, coming out to Witherspoon this Friday afternoon is a good bet for a great time. Lighten your mood after a long week, and chill out to some good tunes. If you possess even a slight fondness for reverby guitar music, you definitely don’t want to miss out on this one. Music starts at five. Come hang!
