My Top 5 Favorite Gutturals

Besides “blegh!” gutturals are my other favorite things in a metal song. Gutturals are when the vocalist can hit a really low note that almost sounds distorted. These are insane and always make the song 10 times better. I love gutturals that transition into pig squeals. Pig squeals are sick as hell and I love when vocalist can hit gutturals live!! It is extremely hard to hit a low note live but some vocalists can hit them with ease (I love it).

Unanswered – Suicide Silence (featuring Phil Bozeman from Whitechapel)

When Mitch Lucker (former singer of Suicide Silence) passed away back in 2012, the band had a benefit concert for Lucker’s daughter and vocalists came out and did one song with the band in honor of Mitch. It was such a cool idea and I am happy that it was successful. Phil Bozeman came on stage to perform Unanswered. This song starts with a beating and it keeps pounding throughout the entire song. Bozeman’s voice is so powerful throughout, and he did some of the craziest gutturals. AND HE DID THEM LIVE!!! Phil is a boss. I wish Suicide Silence would record this song with Bozeman on vocals, it was lit.

The Somatic Defilement – Whitechapel

Okay, so you already know that Whitechapel was going to be on here because Bozeman is the king of gutturals. This song is off their first record (The Somatic Defilement) and it is started with a little drum solo and then the guitars kick in with a dark and heavy riff. Then, Bozeman yells into the mic. The song picks up and as expected, Bozeman does one of the nastiest gutturals ever. The music stops and all you can hear is his voice. IT IS INSANE!! Then the music kicks back in with a groovy riff and some blast beats… Love it!!! This song is amazing live btw.

*** HONORARY MENTION**** Brimstone off of Whitechapel’s new album, The Valley, is pretty sick, too.

Sworn Adherent – A Wake in Providence

The vocalist for this band always sounds like he is gutturalizing (is that a word? I’m going with it). His voice is strong and powerful and can go up to different ranges and speeds. This song has one of my favorite gutturals because it’s crispy and thick (sounds like I am describing bacon), and it is right before a beatdown!!! Also throughout the song, he does little pig squeals like “EEEPPP” with insane double bass and it’s just sick. I love it.

Kill or Be Killed – Spite

SPITE CULT AYYYEEEE!!!!! Spite is so good, if you haven’t seen them I highly suggest that you do. This song instantly kicks off, and then you can hear Darius, their vocalist, barking into the mic. You can’t help but to start jamming once that kicks in. Darius transitions his voice from yelling/screams to gutturals and pig squeals so easily and he can also do it live!!! He is one of my favorite vocalists because of his technique and stage presence.

Dwell – Traitors

Are you surprised that Traitors made it onto my list? Because I’m not. Their vocalist, Tyler, also has some of the best vocals that I have heard. He sounds like he is always doing gutturals because he usually uses a deeper voice in their songs. He has some killer lows throughout this song, and some insane pig squeals (mainly when he says “I scream”). You will not be disappointed with this song, I promise. And their singer sounds the same live!!! They are such a great band live and they always have some of the craziest mosh pits during their show.

What are some of your favorite songs that have gutturals?

Stay Metal,

THE SAW

NC’s Up and Coming Hip-Hop Movement

Now more than ever before, North Carolina has a valuable place in hip-hop. Following Fayetteville native; J. Cole’s come up, local rappers began to realize that national or even global success might be attainable. With Charlotte’s own, Da Baby and his overnight success that came with the release of his new album and nationwide tour Baby on Baby, and left him with a #1 hit on the billboard charts, came a string of other NC artists that all have something to prove.

Stunna 4 Vegas from Salisbury is the most prominent example. With his hit; Animal (ft. Da Baby) and his opening act on the Baby on Baby Tour, he showcased his hardened country flare on a national stage that learned to both recognize and respect him.

Female rapper TiaCorine from Winston Salem is also a local rapper who seems to be on the come up. She has received recognition from the notable morning radio show, The Breakfast Club. Her hit single, Lotto, personifies her suave “bubblegum rap” style and has given her a rightful place in the upcoming female hip-hop movement.

Local Underground artists are also beginning to get the recognition they deserve.

ZenSoFly, a female rapper from right here in Raleigh, has been opened up for artists as notable as Rico Nasty. Likewise, BiggKeso, another Raleigh native and rapper, has opened up for Megan the Stallion.

Rapper, Lil House Phone from Charlotte, has received national fame with his album, Voicemails, that has allowed him to headline tours and have features and shows with notable icons such as Father. Another Charlotte rapper, 10Cellphones, has gotten everything from interviews with No Jumper to mentions on Rap Genius and features on Elevator Mag for his new wave style rap that the internet adores.

Even rural NC has fostered upcoming stars.

New Bern’s Cloudy Nueve has gotten shootouts from Riff Raff, features on Lyrical Lemonade, and Elevator Mag and almost 50,000 views on his hit song; From the Durt.

The Lost Gen, a rap group from Wake Forest, has gotten recognition from hip-hop specialist and internet personality, Adam 22, and has consistently worked with notable upcoming artists like WifisFuneral and BigBabyGucci.

Needless to say, the hip-hop scene NC is coming up fast. For the first time really ever, many local hip-hop artists have easy access to a platform that could lead them to national recognition and even fame. Maybe soon, we’ll be bigger than the Atlanta hip-hop. Only time can tell.

New Album Review

EP Review- Forever In a Day by Les the Genius

Earlier this week, NC State’s own dropped his EP; Forever in a Day. The album features 7 original songs with 3 local features and in all, proves to be definitely worth the listen. His lyrical style of rap guarantees a smooth listen and his R&B inspired beats give the entire album a soulful vibe.

Les features fellow young local artists like himself including; Jaheal from The Lost Gen, J Free, and Marko Luka, all of which compliment his laid back style and seem to have a fluid relationship with Les’s vocals.

The track Onyae’s Song features young local female singer, Onyae Tybre, who provides an extremely melodic and harmonious quality not only to the track but to the album as a whole. Her voice illuminates the listener’s ears and partners with the cool flow of Les’s voice to create something like a Dreamville Effect.

The Ep is even more significant because it features many shoutouts to Raleigh and the local culture, even including a song titled; Hometown. The track illustrates Les’s experience in dealing with a girl from his hometown (Raleigh) while being an upcoming artist and still trying to play a major role in the city.

In all, Forever in a Day is definitely a local summertime bop. Whether taking a night drive in your car, or watching the sunset with your boo, or simply just vibing, the EP will serenade you until the very last track.

Les the Genius is a new member of the up and coming local hip-hop movement and he definitely has something to prove. So if you’re in the mood to vibe, definitely give it a listen!
