I remember about two years ago when Future Kings of Nowhere came out with their self titled debut album. It struck a chord immediately with the WKNC staff who played it constantly for months and with the public who packed the shows at every turn. However, it has probably been a long time since you have seen Future Kings of Nowhere in concert, notably due to the fact that Shayne O’Neill has recently moved to Brooklyn to continue his music career and carry on FKoN solo as the project originally began. Unfortunately, that wait for the next show could be even longer:
Shayne has recently become diagnosed with Stage IV Lymphoma and is about to begin treatment. With treatment of course comes medical bills, which as anyone in the world knows today, is not easy to overcome especially for a solo musician. However, FKoN has just released a live solo album for only 84 cents, and all proceeds go to help Shayne’s medical expenses. It features six songs all recorded live at the Dog Matrix Project.
- On Very Nearly Turning Thirty
- Let’s Be Pirates
- The Doom Song
- Like A Staring Contest
- Charles Grodin, You’re My Hero
- My Turn
The album can be downloaded off of Amie Street here. Also, you can follow Shayne’s progress through the treatment by following his personal blog here.
Please help support one of the great local musicians from this area in recent memory and listen to some great music!
Edit: The album now costs $1.20 and each track is 20¢.

*In the event that NC State’s baseball game is on air, the show will resume immediately following.
1. M.I.A came out this week against Twilight in a recent interview with NME. After being offered to record a song for the Twilight soundtrack she said, “They asked me– luckily Jimmy (Lovine, boss at Interscope) had beef with the Twilight people, so he stepped in and told them to fuck off.” M.I.A also came out against Lady Gaga stirring up reactions in fans saying, “People say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently,” she said, “but she spits it out exactly the same. None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is.” (via NME)
2. Wilco will be curating their own festival at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. The band will be headlining the “Solid Sound Festival.” Alongside Wilco, and number of side projects from members of the band will also be joining. This will be Wilco’s only show over the summer, and it will take place in mid-August. (via Pitchfork)
3. Mates of State will be releasing a cover album entitled “The Spaghetti Incident?” The album is currently available for streaming only. The band covers acts including Girls, Death Cab for Cutie, Belle and Sebastian, and many more. (via Pitchfork)
4. Dan Deacon has remixed Owen Pallett’s “Lewis Take Off His Shirt” for the b-side to Pallett’s 12’ single that is set to release June 22. Pallett is planning on spending the next few months touring both North America and Europe. (via Pitchfork)
5. British folk star Laura Marling has come out against the criminalization of illegal downloads. In offering her reasoning she said, “I don’t think people should be criminalized for getting music for free because it’s there, it’s offered to them.” She added, “It’s promised to them by the internet server people, it’s promised to them by the phone companies. I think it’s their responsibility.” (via NME)

1. The Libertines are set to reunite after they played their last show together in 2004. The band is set to play both the Reading and Leeds festivals. All 4 of the original band members will be returning in late August. The only area of uncertainty has been the status of Pete Doherty who has run into problems with the law as of late. (via Pitchfork)
2. Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse is currently in the process of writing for a Cartoon Network show entitled “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.” Brock is said to be working on a special that the show is creating, and no exact date for when the show will air has been announced just yet. (via Pitchfork)
3. Toro y Moi has had to cancel several tour dates after being robbed. After their show in Brooklyn the band’s car was broken into with member Chaz Bundick having his laptop and passport stolen. No plans have been made to make up those missed shows. (via Pitchfork)
4. Jack White has revealed that The White Stripes’ song “Seven Nation Army” was almost not released. The group’s record label at the time was initially opposed to releasing the duo’s most easily recognizable song as a single in 2003. White said, “I wanted to put Seven Naiton Army out as a single. The label in England and the label in America both didn’t want to.” (via NME)
5. Band of Horses have announced the tracklisting and the release date for their follow up to 2007’s “Cease to Begin.” The new album entitled “Infinite Arms” is set to release in mid May, and their first single from the album is the track “Compliments.” (via NME)
Cynic will release a new EP titled Re-Traced on May 18 that I and I know many other prog fans have been looking forward to. Ever since the release of Traced In Air, we the fans have been eagerly awaiting to see what these masterminds have planned for us. While the EP will not consist of new work, it will have four of the best songs re-imagined by the band, as well as one new track. I got to hear this one track live, and I instantly fell in love with it. The song was “Wheels Within Wheels”, and it is an epic spiraling song of beauty with guitars and drums woven together to make a tapestry you can lose yourself in. Cynic only seems to be getting better with each album, and they are turning out to be one of the most creative bands to tour and release music. They constantly evolve and don’t let the idea of genre force them to write music they don’t want to. I cannot wait for this EP to come out, and I certainly cannot wait for the new full length to come out. Let us just hope we don’t have to wait another 15 years for a new album. I have included at the bottom, fan footage taken of their new song. I apologize for the sound quality, but thanks to MetalInjection.com for having a good version, because apparently mine is to big of a file size.
