End your first week of the Semester right! January 13 LBLB

This week at Tir Na nOg we have two darling bands to delight us. WKNC is proud to present The Revolutionary Sweethearts of Raleigh and Crystal Bright & the Silver Hand of Greensboro. The show is FREE, 21 and up, and starts at 10 p.m.

The Revolutionary Sweethearts

I’ve seen this band twice… once on Thanksgiving with Felix the Drum Machine and again with The Loners. I must say I fell in love with these two the first time I heard them. The band “draws inspiration from indie-rock projects like Fugazi to singer-songwriters such as Neko Case. Filled with catchy melodies and curious harmonies, the music is simple yet dynamic… The Revolutionary Sweethearts continue to write and play music, and eagerly look forward to recording their first album in the upcoming year.” (quote found on their Myspace page)

I will have the Revolutionary Sweethearts at the station on Thursday at 7 p.m. so be sure to tune in!  They promise some live music!

Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands

“Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands have a maddeningly eclectic sound. This band is truly difficult to put a label on. Depending on the song being played, one could describe them using a variety of descriptions ranging from circus nightmare theme to Spanish traditional song to experimental noise. The band is composed of Crystal Bright playing accordion, keyboard, saw, and whatever other little toy she decides to pick up (There’s one instrument that looks like a big hamburger that she hits with mallets.), Pete Lewis on the drums, Charles Kurtz on upright bass, and Diego Diaz on guitar, toothbrush, and electric lapsteel. Definitely a hell of a wall of sound. Crystal Bright is an amazing multi-instrumentalist Badass with the voice of a damn banshee.” -Taylor Bays (before his badass joined the band)

Although we’d love to see IWTDI play this Thursday we’ll have to wait and see them another time.

First LBLB of 2011!

And… We’re Back!

On January 6, Tir Na nOg and WKNC bring you the first show of the New Year.  I Was Totally Destroying It and special guests that are TBA.  This week’s band is deliciously pop punk.  If you haven’t heard them, check their website listen to the songs.   “My Favorite Haunt”  has always been a favorite of mine.  I Was Totally Destroying It is also an old time friend of Tir Na nOg.  They’ve even done special tribute nights at the pub doing U2 covers (I Was Totally Destroying U2).

The show is 21 and up, FREE, and music starts at 10 p.m.

As for other news… Between semesters Local Beer Local Band Night has been going through some changes.  Now the event is bound to be better than ever.  What to expect for the new year:

  • Our new booker Mark Connor to bring you the best in local music,

  • More emphasis on beer with samples and “learning stations” set up at the events by local breweries,

  • Heavier involvement with the surrounding community.

  • FUN!

December 16 LBLB

Your favorite Thursday activity brought to you by WKNC and Tir Na nOg has returned again to present Jack the Radio and Debonzo Brothers! Local Beer Local Band Night is a FREE event, 21 and up, and starts at 10 p.m.

Jack the Radio—A more bluesy-rock feel. You can check this video of them playing at Tir Na nOg last month.

Debonzo Brothers —I’ve had a listen to their songs and they should complement Jack the Radio wonderfully.

WKNC and Tir Na nOg are presenting Double Negative, Devour, and Nine Fingered Thug this week for Local Band Local Beer Night. The show is FREE, 21 and up, and starts at 10 p.m.  DELICIOUS local beers are on tap, though for some reason listening to hardcore always makes me want to drink PBR.  I cannot explain this. Then I want to smash the can…

December 2 LBLB expected to melt faces…

This Thursday in particular, WKNC and Tir Na nOg are teaming up with Raleigh Denim to showcase Annuals and The Light Pines. As usual, this show is FREE, 21 and up, and starts at 10 p.m.  Honestly, I suggest getting there early. Who knows? We could hit capacity! Especially since Raleigh Denim will be giving away a FREE pair of their designer jeans to lucky attendees!!

I really don’t think that either of these bands need an introduction. Both of these bands are among the greatest local bands. If you don’t know who they are… shame on you.

Embarrassing Fruits


These guys played on NCSU’s Harris Field for the first installment of Fridays on the Lawn this semester.  I thoroughly enjoyed their show. On the one hand, they sang a song about conspiracies and on the other, something so love sick my heart ached. My favorite line? something like, “I want to be the one to kill spiders for you.” Oh please, Embarrasing Fruits, if you kill spiders for me there will be no Long Distance Breakup Summer.  Promise.


Kid Future

Seriously the sexiest new band to hit the Raleigh scene.

“The three-dude Kid Future is an upstart in the most absolute sense, having played about a dozen shows and released only a handful of rough recordings online. Those tunes are keyboard-and-guitar gestalts, given to verses and hooks that look to serve the mood, not themselves. Think The National in the basement with drum machines and synths.” —Grayson Currin, The Independent

Americans In France

“Though they’re a little more Black Flag than Buddy Holly, there’s a sloppy, rudimentary straightforwardness to Americans in France. That’s not to call their debut, Pretzelvania, simplistic, though. Actually, the Chapel Hill trio plays with a great deal of skill, shifting styles (punk, post-punk, ballad, droning space rock, peppy rave-ups) with the precision of an Indy car shifting gears coming out of a caution flag. But their ragged, kitchen-sink experimentalism is far from pretentious, striking a playful, clowning tone that doesn’t take itself too seriously.” —Chris Parker, The Independent

LBLB November 11 Presented by New Raleigh!

This Thursday will be a New Raleigh Showcase of three lovable acts: Bright Young Things, Gray Young, and Heads on Sticks.  WKNC and Tir Na nOg are happy to bring you this FREE, 21 and up event every week.  Music starts at 10 p.m.  Grab yourself a tasty local brew (they’re on special!) and enjoy some local live music.

With their music famously described as “The Beatles on a really bad day,” there is something especially charming about this music group.

Local Band Local Beer November 4

Thursday, November 4—Local Band Local Beer!

A Listening party for Freedom Suite, a new album from The Beast and Nnenna Freelon, featuring performances from The Beast, King Mez, Carlitta Durand, Brody & Choch, and a special turntablism, live drums, and sampling set from producers The Apple Juice Kid and Zakee who have worked with M.I.A., Wale (pronounced Wal-lay), and Rye Rye.

The Beast will headline this show and special guests include:

Producers The Apple Juice Kid (has worked w/ Wale, Camp Lo) and Zakee (has worked w/ M.I.A., Rye Rye) will be performing a collaborative set featuring turntablism, live percussion, and sampling.

The show is FREE. Ages 21 and up. Starts at 10pm.

Local Beat Roundtable: Series 2 preview 10/29/10

Tonight on the Local Beat we begin our second installment of the Local Beat Roundtable Series.  If you remember from back in August when we had our first in the roundtable discussions with Betsy Harris, Karen Mann, Jake Seaton, Linnie Green, and Bryan Reed the focus on these roundtable discussions is not to focus on the music that make up our scene but the people who promote it and document it.

This evening we are having several exemplary characters in on the program for what should turn out to be some great conversation.

Ross Grady has been the most prominent local music documenter probably ever in our region.  It seems his dedication to the scene knows no bounds.  In addition to running Triangle Rock and starting up Alt Music Chapel Hill Ross is also the guardian of his radio program on WXDU that happens every Sunday from 4pm-6pm.  Be sure to listen in on 88.7 or stream it live on the internet!

Ryan Sweeney is another radio personality who was the general manager at 89.3 WSOE in 2009.  He is now living in Cary and the Director of Communications at the popular website Choose Local Music.  In addition to other things Ryan is a great local music connoisseur who should have plenty to share.

Glenn Boothe is the main man at one of the most significant local venues in the Triangle, the Local 506 in Chapel Hill.   Commonly the central hub of local music in our area, the Local 506 is commonly mentioned by bands and fans alike as their favorite place to watch live music in our area.   I can’t wait to chat with Glenn about his thoughts on the music in our area.

Another music venue owner, Chris Tamplin is stopping by.  Chris was the main organizer for Local Beer Local Band and booked shows at Tir Na Nog before starting his own venture with Durham’s newest local venue, Motorco.  Chris should have some fascinating insight into the different cities and their relationships to the music surrounding them among other things.

Eric Chen is also dropping by.  You might have heard Eric on WXYC for nine years or seen him at many Hammer No More The Fingers shows (as well as others) with his video camera in tote.  Eric has been documenting the music in our area for some time now and I am sure he will have plenty to add to our convseration.  Check out his Vimeo Account here.
