Superchunk to Play Free Show at The Pinhook

DJ DiGiorno and C’est La Bri

Superchunk and Merge Records are both huge institutions for music in North Carolina. We at WKNC consider them to be the foundation of budding local music, and they have helped set the bar for great acts to come from our state.

The following is taken from a blog post written by Merge Records August 19th at 10:32 A.M. regarding Superchunk’s free show at the Pinhook tomorrow night. Their latest album, I Hate Music, hits stores tomorrow, and if you’re in the area, you can pick up both the the album and a free ticket, from one of the Superchunk band members at participating record stores in the triangle.

“Superchunk will kick off their US tour dates in support of I Hate Music in Atlanta on August 22, but Triangle fans will get a release-day treat: the band will play a surprise early show at The Pinhook in Durham on Tuesday, August 20, as part of an “I Hate Happy Hour” event from 6–8 p.m. Admission is free, but you will need a ticket to get in.

To get tickets to “I Hate Happy Hour,” visit one of the local record stores listed below on Tuesday, and follow @mergerecords on Twitter for more opportunities to win. Also, a limited number of tickets will be at the door at 6 p.m. And starting at noon on Tuesday, Mac, Laura, Jon, and Jim will each be taking the helm at a local record store, selling I Hate Music and giving away “I Hate Happy Hour” tickets. See below for a full list of stores that will be giving away tickets to “I Hate Happy Hour,” including information about the stores where Superchunk will be hard at work.

Come celebrate I Hate Music with us at The Pinhook! Have a drink, listen to some upcoming Merge releases, and stay for a live performance by Superchunk! Laura will be manning the bar making a special “signature” cocktail, and we’ll welcome Jason Narducy as the live Superchunk bassist as the band prepares to kick off its tour.

Pre-order Superchunk’s I Hate Music on CD and LP in the Merge store. The album is also available for pre-order at iTunes, where Superchunk’s full catalog is on sale now at a special price.

Get tickets to “I Hate Happy Hour” beginning tomorrow at:

Concert on the Lawn Monday, 8/19 feat Museum Mouth and Heyrocco

WKNC presents a Concert on the Lawn, our part of our free outdoor concert series Fridays on the Lawn. We’re spicing it up for this new year of freshman by hosting in on Monday, August 19th from 5-7 PM to welcome them on their first day on-campus. This event is free and open to the public, so we hope to see you there!

This time around, we have two great indie rock acts, Museum Mouth from Southport and Heyrocco from Charleston. Museum Mouth have been featured numerous times on mtvU, which also featured WKNC last year for college radio, and are known for their lively performances and their indie rock meets pop-punk sound. From loud and bouncy to beat up and lonely, Museum Mouth carry through their sets with a sense of earnest and memorable, catchy guitar riffs. Their vocals are reminiscent of Beat Happening- if you can imagine it put to high powered pop-punk.

Watch “Sexy But Not Happy” by Museum Mouth.

Heyrocco have probably played in North Carolina more than they’ve played in their homestate, so we’ve claimed them as our own. They are the first non-local band to join us in the Concert/Fridays on the Lawn series, and we’re glad to have them! The group has a knack for writing catchy, indie pop songs and adding personality layered behind them. They’re dynamic, and they bring with them a great live performance: from listening to them, you’d think they’d been doing this for years, but they’re just a few years out of high school! Heyrocco composes smiling music- the kind you have to dance to.

Listen to "Elsewhere“ by Heyrocco.
"The Lawn” is at West Campus Amphitheater behind the Bragaw building on Dan Allen Drive. For your GPS needs, its street address is 2520 Sullivan Drive, 27650. Parking is available in Dan Allen Deck and all spots marked “C”.

Come out to Concert on the Lawn at West Campus Amphitheater for a FREE evening of local music, free food, prizes, and giveaways!

Fridays on the Lawn is Back!

Come join us next Friday, April 12th, at 6pm for WKNC’s final installment for the semester of Fridays on the Lawn. It’s going to be a grand ol’ time with two incredible indie rock acts: Lonnie Walker and Oulipo. Fridays on the Lawn is WKNC’s free outside concert series. It will be located on Harris Field in front of the Witherspoon building.

Lonnie Walker, who played for WKNC’s 45th birthday party last year, is returning from some recent time off and we couldn’t be happier. Lonnie Walker started out in Greenville, North Carolina and songwriter Brian Corum later relocated to Raleigh with his band. They have since played a countless number of shows including at Hopscotch Music Festival and have really made a name for themselves in North Carolina’s local music scene.

Oulipo, a young band from Raleigh, has also played for Hopscotch Music Festival as well as WKNC’s Double Barrel Benefit X. The band is signed to local label DiggUp Tapes and describes themselves as being in the art pop/ rock genre. Oulipo has been compared to Panda Bear with their synthetic vocals and very abstract pop sound.

Bring a blanket and some friends while you enjoy some free food and listen to these great bands. Join the Facebook event for more information as the event approaches!

Maryland Deathfest

Maryland Deathfest, the self-proclaimed biggest American metal party of the year, is quickly creeping up! With tickets having been rapidly selling since the fest’s lineup announcements last year, it is nearly impossible now to get tickets to any of the big events through the fest’s official website. Tickets to the Thursday Sonar show (Bolt Thrower) and Friday’s Soundstage show (Infest) are current in incredibly high demand.

Thursday has an extremely impressive line-up, featuring the almighty Bolt Thrower, who hardly comes to the United States as it is! Funeral doom gods Evoken are also set to play on Thursday – I’m personally especially excited to see them. Other notable acts are Japanese black-thrashers Abigail and U.S. doom lords Pallbearer. Friday features grindcore gods Repulsion, Benediction, and several other insane acts. Saturday and Sunday are also filled with incredible bands well worth seeing, such as Canada’s war metal maniacs Revenge and U.K.’s Cruciamentum.

This is most definitely not an event to miss. Previous attendants of Maryland Deathfest will tell you how awesome the food is, how crazy the shows are, and how insane the record selection is. Prepare to bring hundreds of dollars for records alone!

As for the details on the fest, as many of you may already know, it begins Thursday, May 23rd, and ends Sunday, May 26th. This is a perfect start date for college students, such as myself, who have been slaving over schoolwork all year just to get their fix of summer metal fun!

The Infest reunion is going to be absolutely insane. I’ll see you dudes in the mosh. I hope you all have your tickets!

Must See Show of the Week: Brett Harris/Young Rapids/Paperhaus

Tuesday, April 2nd- Brett HarrisYoung Rapids, and Paperhaus at Motorco Music Hall, 8pm, FREE

Young Rapids

 (Young Rapids)

As always, the Triangle provides us with some great concerts this week.  You can check out the full round-up over at the Rock Report.  The standout show for this week features local singer/songwriter Brett Harris as well as two up and coming indie pop-rock bands out of DC. Brett Harris has become something of a local master of pop. He began his career by releasing a batch of EPs and touring heavily. His debut album Man of Few Words was released in 2010 and made its rounds through various music blogs.  After some time off since its release, he is back at it again.

But the main highlight of this show are the bands making their way down from DC.  Young Rapids released their debut album Day Light Savings last year.  The album received quite a bit of praise from all around including some love from NPR’s All Songs Considered as their infectious breed of perfectly crafted indie pop-rock took hold.  Their music is a very smartly composed and driven of indie rock that is sure to get you going.  With them they bring an even newer band out of DC, Paperhaus.  Paperhaus is a band in much of the same vain with a bit more of a psychedelic influence.  Their new song “Helicopters” off their upcoming EP, Lo Hi Lo, was recently featured on NPR.  While love for music from DC is to expected from NPR, this DC duo of bands have received a stamp of approval from the rest of the country as well as their two-month nationwide tour approaches its end.  So be sure to stop by the Motorco this Tuesday for a great time.  Who can say no to a free show?

Damaged City Fest

For those of you who have no idea about modern punk bands, there’s an insane fest coming up that definitely destroys most punk shows I’ve seen popping up recently. Damaged City Fest is a huge fest taking place in DC (get it?) on April 12th and 13th at St. Stephen’s Church. And coolest of all, Double Negative (Raleigh hardcore) is playing.

At the top of the poster is legendary hardcore punk band Negative Approach, whose song ‘Ready To Fight’ has been covered by literally half of the good bands I’ve seen in my life, if that says anything. Dropdead sits at the top as well – their plain-looking logo says nothing about how brutal the band is. Last time I saw Dropdead was in DC with Magrudergrind – they definitely play harder than most younger dudes.

Double Negative (Raleigh’s own hardcore outfit) earns a top spot as well on the poster. Their psyched-out style of hardcore has earned them a much-deserved, worldwide reputation.

Prisoner Abuse, a band that has been receiving a lot of hype recently, is playing as well, featuring the vocalist from Think I Care. Other bands I’m definitely looking forward to are Sick Fix, Tenement, and Ilsa.

This fest is being put on by cool dudes for cool dudes, so if you’re a cool dude, it would only make sense if you went and supported the Raleigh and DC scenes.
