The leaves are turning, the air is chilling and people are wearing sweaters again. Out with the flip-flops and in with the fuzzy socks, it’s time for Fall.
I love Fall. I love Fall so much I wish it could be Fall all the time. Sadly, that’s not possible here in the great NC. That being said, I have decided to make a playlist full of Fall favorites (not a Halloween playlist) to make the season just right. **Warning: This playlist may contain adult material.**
When I think of Fall, I think of grunge, fuzzy distortion, angst and nu metal. I made a playlist with all of that and more. I’ll admit that some of my choices are a little on the nose but I decided that this is a playlist to make the Fall the best it can be and so why not have some on the nose things.
My playlist has grunge artists like Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Dexter and The Moonrocks alongside Sex Bob-Omb from the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” We’ve got nu metal like Linkin Park and Seether as well as a lot of alternative rock like Dozer, Stone Temple Pilots, Public Theatre, High June and more.
I’ve got a couple songs from movies in here and a couple songs in Russian. They aren’t even the songs I would say might be out of place in this playlist. If I were to pick some that seemed a little out of place, I’d pick “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Talking In Your Sleep” by The Romantics, “Desdemona” by The Beaches or “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode. To me, each of these songs deserves a place despite the theme and feeling of the rest of the playlist.
I chose to add “American Pie” because truthfully, I associate it most with the idea of playing an acoustic guitar outside by a bonfire on a chilly fall night. I can imagine the smell of the fire, the sunset colors accentuate the vibrancy of the turning leaves and I can feel the crisp breeze on my back. The song itself is about the death of Buddy Holly but there are strong tones of loss with the Vietnam War backdrop. This together feels melancholic and appropriate for the turning of the seasons from Summer to Fall.
“Talking In Your Sleep” by the Romantics is a guilty pleasure song for me. The stark difference between that song and the rest of the playlist is riveting. I have just always felt like it was a great song to just kind of vibe to in the Fall time. I can imagine myself going on a nice nature walk with this song playing in my earbuds. I’d be in a great mood the whole time while watching the colors and wildlife around me.
While it might seem like a Summery song, “Desdemona” by The Beaches is on this playlist because I feel like it could be appropriate for both. In the Summer, I feel the beachy, jangly guitar opening fits perfectly. However, the lyricism and the vocals resonate a lot more with Fall in my opinion. Plus, my car is named after this song and I love, love, love driving her around in the Fall with the music up and the windows cracked.
Lastly, I have decided to include “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode. To me, the medium speed coupled with the synthesizer and monotonous vocals is a perfect representation of a Fall night. My feelings when I listen to this song are not unlike the feelings of sitting on the porch and carving a pumpkin after dark.
I hope everyone can find something they love about this playlist and have a wonderful Fall.
