Chainsaw Rock Presents: The DeathPod
by Cannibal Cory on Sep.21, 2011, under Chainsaw, DeathPod
What happens when you mix the wide-ranging audience of podcast with the insanely powerful, heavy, and brutal forces of Metal? Well, the Mistress of Destruction and I have our own ideas about the chaos and anarchy that could ensue! Just remember, it is up to those who subject themselves to the ridiculously awesome DeathPod to misbehave themselves. At least, that is what our undead legal department in tattered suits advised us to disclaim.
Originally, the Mistress of Destruction came forward with the idea to promote a Chainsaw podcast that contained many regional bands that were either unsigned or belonged to smaller labels. The goal of the DeathPod is to bring forth metal music that absolutely destroys the local scenes, in addition to allowing listeners to headbang on the job, in the middle of class, or while rocking children to sleep.
With that goal in mind the Mistress and I set off, and after many grueling, gory, and archaic nights our first DeathPod was weaponized and ready to be unleashed upon the masses.
We proudly present:
RBT from Raleigh, N.C.
Coils Of The Serpent from Boone, N.C.
Escher from Raleigh/Durham, N.C.
Akris from the Washington D.C. area.
Lions Of Tsavo from Austin, Texas.
Bridesmaid from Columbus, Ohio.
So why wait? Go ahead and listen to the DeathPod.
If you are a fan of a band or are a member of a band that wants to get involved, then please post on the Facebook page or get in contact with the Cannibal at chainsaw@wknc.org.

Into the Grave with Gigan, Blood Red Throne, and Pathology
by manda.bala.aqui on Sep.06, 2011, under Chainsaw, Reviews
Greetings! I know, the title is a little lame, but the Gigan, Pathology, Blood Red Throne and Grave show was the complete opposite. The show was Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Volume 11.
I’ll start at the beginning with Gigan. Yeah, Gigan, the monster the fought Godzilla, well he just devoured all the other bands so the show ended early….
Bad joke. For real, though, Gigan was awesome. Since appearing last in Raleigh the band has changed its line up but is still equally kick-ass. Gigan’s innovative style and talent was a strange match to Grave’s death metal feel, but they were excellent openers for the following bands.
** Sorry for any Pathology fans, I didn’t see them. I needed my eardrums for Blood Red Throne and Grave.**
Blood Red Throne DESTROYED. That is the most head banging I’ve done in a while. Norway is known for its black metal but this death metal band stands as a reminder that more comes from those snowy lands than Hades and Emperor (Ironically, past members from Emperor have graced the stage with BRT).
Finally, GRAVE. Swedish death metal. A brutal set which sealed the reputation that Northern Europe rules at playing metal. Though their albums only include three members they play live as a four piece. Two guitars, a bass and drums.
And I conclude with Magnus Mertinsson, he is the add-on member for live shows and he looks the most like Cousin It! Which is where we started, It going to a show! Well, that’s it, until next time!

The Facts of the Matter
by manda.bala.aqui on Jul.26, 2011, under Chainsaw, Local, Reviews
Primitive Ways Records presented Snake Baptist (N.C.), RBT (N.C.) and F*uck the Facts (Canada)
July 23, 2011 at Kings Barcade
Snake Baptist: These guys were a riot. Slapping people and punching holes in the wall all while playing some solid, what has be described as turboviolence. Excellent to watch, excellent to listen to; hope these dude play again soon. (I’ll snap some shots when I see them play again.)
RBT: Renegade Bong Tyrants or they could be the renegade beard tyrants (all members have impressive beards). These dudes have laid it out every time I have seen them. Awesome vocals with killer guitar, bass and drums deliver complete hardcore havoc.
The Bong Tyrants
F*ck the Facts: I have to say in the past two months I’ve never liked Canada so much. Three bands have ventured from their motherland down south to play in Raleigh this summer and F*ck the Facts was the best by far. Overflowing with the energy needed for great grindcore they blew my mind. Awesome drumming, ripping guitar and mesmerizing vocals left my ears wanting more. Basically, these guys were a lot of fun to watch and even more fun to listen to. Also, their art was done by their lead singer Mel and ruled.
That is it.

Cannibal’s Corner V: Do You Like Anaal (Nathrakh)?
by Cannibal Cory on Jun.22, 2011, under Chainsaw

It's evident Anaal Nathrakh loves the ladies with a Passion.
I sure as hell do! Anaal Nathrakh has released another ear-shattering gut-pulverizing mind-munching limb-decapitating lung-popping skull-smashing brain-bursting intestinal-disemboweling album, Passion.
This album is to family friendliness as loaded guns are to baby pacifiers. Unless you’re the Manson family. The guitars are raw and brutal, but never approach blandness as they’re broken up with slight melodies, industrial undertones, guitar solos, and even growling solos! Their songs encompass a certain stand-alone uniqueness missing amongst the more grind core-oriented bands. This does mean that there are clean vocals, which at first put me off like an undefiled grave. However, upon listening to the entire album, it’s clear that they’re a great juxtaposition against the pure, raw, and grotesque microphone-swallowing exercises these guys do. And it doesn’t take away from the horn-rising head-banging factor at all.
In totality, this is one ear-splitting album with many differing embellishments that are sparsely used to recreate the old “put this album on repeat” syndrome, thought to have been eradicated by its bastard cousin “put this song on repeat” syndrome that big music industries have let flourish.
If anyone looks at you funny for listening to this album, such as family, friends, or significant others, just be sure to tell them that there is nothing wrong with liking Anaal.

N.C. band blends past and present on new EP
by Noobhammer on May.17, 2011, under Chainsaw, Pick of the Week
88.1 WKNC’s Pick of the Week 4/6
There are few bands as unique as local North Carolina legend Between The Buried And Me.
Time has seen this band shift from a pure metalcore band into prog-metal masters. Every album of theirs has shown a shift and change in not only the band’s talent, but also in their songwriting skills. This EP, while it only contains three songs, holds a wealth of material contained in them.
From beginning to end, he Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues will take more twists and turns that 24 does in an entire season. What truly sets this album apart from the band’s previous endeavors, however, is the seamless blending of past and present elements.
We get a sense of what is to come from the start of the record as Thomas Giles ominously plays his keyboards, as if he were summoning the ferocious beast Godzilla from the depths of the ocean for “Specular Reflection.” Just as the piano crescendos into a climax, the guitars and drums kick in, pummeling you with frantic riffs and erratic blast beats.
All throughout this barrage, Giles’s vocals berate us with a harshness seen in many death metal bands. As he screams his heart out, the guitars take a gradual change from intense pummeling to a firm massaging, blending intricately with the harshness of the vocals, before breaking down completely into a serene progressive interlude.
Giles’s vocals adapt to this change as his vocals take on an ethereal aspect, seeming to float over the air, as guitars hold a sustain over a constant drum beat, that slowly builds up into a melody that would make Muse jealous.
Seamlessly transitioning from the first song, “Augment of Rebirth” sweep picks its way into BTBAM history as being quite possibly the heaviest song the band has ever written. Constant stop-go guitar riffs litter the song from beginning to end, as keyboards seem to sneak in ever so slightly, intertwining themselves with the riffs and gutteral vocals.
Seeming to draw inspiration from The Dillinger Escape Plan with regards to insanity, the band constantly switches between intense fast playing and heavy breakdowns that seem to beat into your very soul.
But true to BTBAM style, they refuse to stay constant as they inject a polka interlude reminiscent of the bards of old as they entertained kings, before merging into a polka metal fusion blasting its way through your speakers.
In what could be my favorite song written by the band, “Lunar Wilderness” encapsulates everything that makes BTBAM, well, BTBAM.
It starts off beautiful and chill before suddenly kicking in with harsh vocals and catchy guitar riff that sticks with you for the rest of the day. The vocals take on a dual aspect as they shift between gorgeous clean vocals and harsh yelling.
Known mostly for their intricacies in guitar work, the band spares no expense as they unleash solo after solo, sometimes undercutting the vocals and creating a vacuum of intensity. Suddenly, as if the heavens decided to part and spare us from this destruction, the song drops into a peaceful ending interlude, letting the listener down from the chaos.
Combining all these songs together into one long, conceptual piece, these North Carolinians show they can fuse the beauty with the brutal and the calm with the chaotic, forming a tornado that will sweep you off your feet before putting you back down.
88.1 WKNC Pick of the Week is published every Wednesday in the print edition of Technician, as well as online at technicianonline.com and wknc.org.
