Bonnaroo: Best performances of 2016

Bonnaroo has come and passed this year, but for those of you who didn’t go, or even those of you that did, I’ve compiled my two cents on the best of the best out of each genre of artist that performed this year.

Let’s start with electronic, my expectations were set pretty high with RL Grime, and he definitely delivered. His show was unreal, playing old stuff, new stuff, hard stuff, some intermediary softer stuff, all with a perfectly programmed light show which was mindblowingly perfect. Although I may be biased because I absolutely love some festival trap. Griz was also amazing, despite his mid-day set.

As for the more alternative-tinged pop shows, my personal favorite had to be Halsey, who is just a great performer with catchy and well written songs. She had a huge crowd, and involved them often, interacting with them frequently, and giving it her all during the performance.  A close second was Two Door Cinema club, who also killed their performance.

As for rap, you probably won’t expect my pick, but it was Chance the Rapper. This guy wasn’t even billed on the lineup, but he showed up to multiple shows as well as doing his own thing on Sunday at the Silent Disco. If I wasn’t kinda cheating by picking him, I would definitely go with J Cole, because his set was constant fire the entire time, I had to leave close to the end of it, but I could hear him as well as the crowd from anywhere in the campgrounds.

Also here’s a quick list of honorable mentions, who weren’t the best of the best, but were still certainly great performances:

BORNS

Cashmere Cat

CHVRCHES

Ellie Goulding

Third Eye Blind

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Snoop Dog

Keep an eye out for posts by my co-host Will, who was also covering the festival, I think he’ll be posting some awesome pictures we took at the festival soon!

WKNC still off air June 11, maybe 12

We know you’re bummed. We’re bummed, too. BUT… our crew and the amazing folks at Dimensional Tower, Inc. in Oxford are working through the weekend to upgrade our signal. When we’re done (Saturday evening? hopefully), we’ll be stronger than ever and you’ll be able to hear us farther to the south and east.

You can still stream us online, though, via wknc.org/listen and the new and improved NC State Student Media app for iPhone (Android coming soon, once we get our IT Manager down from the roof).

WKNC off air June 9-10

Your second-favorite radio station in the Triangle has been off the air since around 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 9 and will continue to be off air until the late afternoon of Friday, June 10. We are doing work on our broadcast tower to strengthen our signal, adding better coverage to the south and east, toward Rocky Mount, Wilson and Goldsboro.

In the meantime, you can continue to stream us online at wknc.org and through our new Student Media app for iPhone.

DJ Highlights

My Most Anticipated Artists at Bonnaroo this Year

Join me at Bonnaroo as I check out a ton of awesome concerts, people, and just the generally amazing atmosphere of the festival.

Thursday I’m incredibly excited to see Cashmere Cat, who I’ve heard puts on an amazing show and enjoy the non-mainstream electronic sounds that he continues to produce.

For Friday, I’m not quite sure who I’m anticipating more, Griz or Halsey. Griz can throw down some funky sweet jams, often playing a saxophone alongside his turntables. Halsey on the other hand, has so many great and catchy songs, although she’ll probably have a much larger crowd than Griz, which will make it less of an intimate experience.

Saturday features my most anticipated electronic act of the entire festival, RL Grime, who I will definitely not be missing. I respect him not only as a producer, but also as an amazing DJ. RL Grime utilizes a 4-deck setup for all of his shows due to his history of being a DJ before he began producing music, thus creating such well put together and seamless sets, even though he generally plays a lot of hard trap.

Sunday will be a calm and relaxing day featuring the music of Father John Misty and Saint Motel, my two most anticipated acts of the day.

In addition to the music, I’ll be exploring the many other attractions such as exploring the unique areas in the main venue and the campgrounds, the comedy tent and the Silent Disco, as well as enjoying the awesome foods that can be found in the vending areas (mmmmm spicy pie and Amish doughnuts).

Make you sure follow us on Instagram and Twitter to see what we’re up to at Bonnaroo!
