In many calendars, March 1 is considered the first day of Spring. While our calendar states that the Spring Equinox took place on March 20, my allergies would concur with the former. With the world around us turning yellow with pollen and green with new growth, so too must I present something new. So without further ado, I present to you, my readers, this month’s edition of DJ Dragonfly’s Favorites. Some of these songs have explicit content, so fair warning to everyone.
This month was eventful. At the start of the month, my family dog celebrated his 11th birthday and I celebrated my birthday with my closest friends and family. We also had Spring Break last week. Unfortunately, I had the flu right before Spring Break, but was able to recover just in time to go to four Disney World parks and three Universal Studios parks with my people.
Given that we drove from Raleigh to Orlando and back, those 20 or so hours were filled with music of all kinds. Me and my travel partner are fortunate enough to have similar music tastes, but there are some fundamental differences. They, like me, are big into alternative rock and grunge as well as sprinkles of punk, indie, and metal. A big difference between us would be that they are also fans of outlaw country music and also like a fair amount of rap music. I don’t think much of their taste is reflected this month, despite using my Spotify account for the whole trip, but some of our more mutual choices are.
Some examples of songs that were very much “road trip” songs would be “Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston, “Down Under” by Men At Work and “What Do They Know?” by Mindless Self Indulgence. My travel companion and I almost have an inside joke surrounding “Beautiful Girls” and it was featured for that reason. “Down Under” has been featured in several TikToks I have seen recently and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head, so it showed up a few times in those 20 hours. Lastly, the Mindless Self Indulgence song was one my travel buddy showed me a while ago and it truly is a song I can’t get out of my head and it is so high energy.
Several of my top songs this month are there due to recently having attended the Dexter and The Moonrocks concert in February where Cigarettes @ Sunset opened for them. As a result, songs such as “Where I Steer – Live” by Dexter and The Moonrocks and “Pavement” or “Theresa” by Cigarettes @ Sunset are featured.
Some of my other top songs are dependent on the fact that my band and I are playing a festival next month and they are some of the songs we are planning on playing. Some examples of this would be “Lounge Act” by Nirvana and “Animal I Have Become” by Three Days Grace.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful first few days or weeks of Spring, depending on which calendar you subscribe to. Hopefully we can all overcome the pollen.
