Get Involved/Interest

Take WKNC HD-1 and HD-2 with you on the go. Download on the App store and Get it on Google Play.

WKNC is student-run radio from North Carolina State University and as such only offers volunteer and paid opportunities to current NC State students. There are three main ways to get involved: as a DJ, content contributor or station staff.

DJs (volunteer)

Becoming a DJ is the easiest way to get involved with WKNC. All DJs must be current or incoming NC State students.

Potential DJs should plan to attend an interest meeting, held every fall, spring and summer semester during the first week of classes. They must then submit an application, be accepted into the training program, attend six weeks of classroom training with four concurrent weeks of in-studio training, and pass a written operator’s exam and demonstrative board test to begin DJing.

Training dates and times can vary by semester, but they are typically held on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., so we recommend keeping that time in mind when scheduling classes. The best way to get information on the next training program is to follow us @WKNC881 on social media. To be considered for the training class, please attend an interest meeting to get an application. These are not drop-in meetings. Please arrive on time.

Spring 2025 interest meetings
Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. in 201 Witherspoon

Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. in 201 Witherspoon

Training will be Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. for six week beginning Jan. 22.

WKNC only hosts one DJ training program per semester, with applications typically due at the end of the first week of class. Once training has started you will need to wait until the following semester, but there are non-DJ opportunities listed below.

Content contributors (volunteer)

Content contributors at WKNC work in our content department to write blogs, create YouTube videos, record podcasts, interview artists/groups and submit audio journalism pieces for Eye on the Triangle. Getting involved as a content contributor is a great way to get started with WKNC if you can’t currently attend the DJ training program. You can also become a content contributor at any point in the semester and it greatly improves your chances of being accepted into future DJ training programs. All content contributors must be current or incoming NC State students.

The first step to becoming a content contributor is to attend virtual training. Sessions will be scheduled at the start of each semester, with all other training conducted by request. These are not drop-in meetings. Please arrive on time.

If no dates are available or they do not fit with your schedule, please schedule a 1.5-hour block of time with station adviser Jamie Lynn Gilbert at jlgilber@ncsu.edu and indicate what type of content you are interested in creating.
