Friday, August 12 on “The Local Beat” is the beginning of our next Local Beat Flashback Series which we do one month a year. Throughout the rest of August we will be looking back at past episodes and dusting off some oldies from the vault.

This week we are bringing back two Local Beat Mini Exclusives from April and a live interview from back in November 2010.

Starting off the hour will be an interview we did on November 5, 2010 with members from The Light Pines. The Light Pines have been in the news recently with their free downloadable release of their debut album which came out just a short time ago. In the interview from last year we talked about that new album and the future plans of the band. It should be interesting to see how things panned out for the group between November and now.

The second hour of the show goes to a Local Beat Mini Exclusive from April with The Huguenots. The band’s bassist, York, came in to chat about the band’s debut release. However, not even two weeks after the interview with me, the band called it quits. Still, it made for an interesting conversation.

The final hour of the episode belongs to another April Mini Exclusive, this one with Adam Eckhardt of A Rooster For The Masses, who sat down with me to chat about their newest album, No One Is Ready. Adam is always a great conversationalist and it made for some fantastic discussions.

In one of WKNC alumnus Mikey Perros’s last booking for Local Band Local Beer, Raleigh Denim presented Chapel Hill’s The Light Pines and Raleigh-based Annuals.

This Thursday in particular, WKNC and Tir Na nOg are teaming up with Raleigh Denim to showcase Annuals and The Light Pines. As usual, this show is FREE, 21 and up, and starts at 10 p.m.  Honestly, I suggest getting there early. Who knows? We could hit capacity! Especially since Raleigh Denim will be giving away a FREE pair of their designer jeans to lucky attendees!!

I really don’t think that either of these bands need an introduction. Both of these bands are among the greatest local bands. If you don’t know who they are… shame on you.

Friday evening on the Local Beat will be one you surely do not want to miss.

The first hour of the program Chapel Hill band the Light Pines are coming on to talk with us about a plethora of topics as we promote their First Friday  show at Tir na Nog alongside 12000 Armies and Nudehues.  The Light Pines are almost finished with their debut 10 track album and we will talk about that in plenty.  Also stick around and listen as we chat about their connections with the Love Language and their future touring plans.

From 6pm-8pm I am dedicating two hours to the Troika Music Festival in downtown Durham.  Melissa Thomas and Stuart Horne dropped by earlier in the week to pre-record the two hour interview and it was rather entertaining.  You can go ahead and listen to that interview here, but you can only listen to the Troika bands during the airing of the interview!

Remember the last time The Light Pines played Tir na nOg (or anywhere)? Holy smokes that was awesome.  Well, they along with two of their Drughorse brethren will be rocking the pub’s thatched roof yet again this Friday.

You know the Light Pines, right? If you don’t, well, come to the show and you’ll be glad you did. Here is my review of a show they opened up a couple months ago.

TWELVE THOUSAND ARMIES: Fronted by Justin Williams, the surging  and recently rejuvenated (see: opening for Vetiver tonight at the 506 and recently for the Love Language at Motorco on Oct 23) Twelve Thousand Armies will fill the two-spot in this lineup with their shimmery, nostalgic 60′s pop ballads.  The melodies are playful and tickling, and the lyrics range from mature and serious to downright poignant.

NUDEHUES: You wouldn’t guess that the eerie, lingering and hard-for-me-to-classify compositions of the mysterious Nudehues came from the same brain that spun Max Indian‘s hook-laden toe-tappers for over a year.  Carter Gaj (Max Indian frontman emeritus) and Tom Simpson (Light Pines percussionist) may leave you scratching your head, but they will certainly leave you wanting more.  Compelling and thought-provoking stuff.

This show starts at 9:30, and it costs a conveniently meager five dollars.

I’m a fan of Here We Go Magic; I am a fan of Beach Fossils. Their respective live performances were both reflective of their energetic,  loopy recordings that exist, in my mind at least,  as  sharpened, present day iterations of the old shoe gazey stuff . I maybe blended their sounds together too much there. (If I overgeneralized, I am sorry. Beach Fossils is the more “gazey” of the two, to be sure.) Both bands are great on record, great live, and certainly worth seeing again (not to mention, worth it for you to see one or both of them when you get the chance).

BUT, I’ll go ahead and be honest. (I have the megaphone!)

Light Pines dude.  This was my Ffffifth? Sixth? time seeing this outfit in action, and, as usual, they failed miserably to disappoint. “Knowing what to look for” may be an appropriate good phrase, but I’m barely a musician. I just know to look for the awesome, I guess.

No nonsense. No garrulous banter between songs. No distracting movement.  Just a terse, diligent, and damn-solid entertaining performance. A change of lighting and, if you’re lucky, a modest “thank’yeh”  after each song is all you’re gonna get.  And what would (or possibly could) you do with anything extra?

Nope, I didn’t take pictures.  Flashes are annoying.

For those who pride themselves on being familiar with local indie music within the Triangle, it would be a cardinal sin to overlook The Love Language‘s rise within our tight knit music community in recent months. Indy Week gave the Raleigh band a nice cover photo and article last week, which chronicled the almost Cinderella story of Stu McLamb’s personal setbacks with the broken band this past December and his ability to bounce back to release Libraries on Merge Records, Love Language’s second album. Personally, The Love Language’s recent openings for international band Phoenix this June in Raleigh and Charlotte have cemented their growing momentum.

Although I admit that Libraries did not top their self-titled first album, I could not deny the raw energy that was present on stage at Cat’s Cradle Saturday night. The lead singer was composed, on point, and looked sincerely grateful to play the sold out show. He opened the night playing solo in deep spotlight, embodying the loneliness but also the his perseverance through the past few months. As McLamb finished quietly, the rest of the band transitioned perfectly in with “Horophones,” which symbolically represented the new band members’ solidarity. Although the show was aimed at showcasing Libraries, fans were treated with old favorites and special guests such as members from local band Lost in the Trees.

I couldn’t help but notice the various types of people that packed into the spacious Cradle, which signified that McLamb and friends are producing wide appeal. However, the Cradle wasn’t just teeming with life before the headliners walked on stage. Although I made a late appearance that night (due to an unscheduled pit-stop to gather some delicious French fries,) I luckily caught most of The Light Pines‘ set. Last time I saw these guys was at the largest Local Beer Local Band night I’ve experienced where they attracted a huge crowd. Thankfully, things haven’t changed much since then. The boys seemed in step with one another producing their familiar haunting melodies. Guitarist Carter Gaj’s riffs were so rewarding that they warranted an impromptu and ecstatic Facebook status update.

Tommyboy was able to fill me in on opening act, Shit Horse, whom I knew relatively nothing about. However, apparently I missed a great deal of antics as the front man was extremely charismatic, soliciting responses now and then from the crowd. On their final number, they brought out a topless girl (both nipples pierced as I’m told) wearing a horse mask. Certainly, it had to have been an unforgettable performance.

The Love Language‘s much anticipated Merge release Libraries dropped recently into the hands of a salivating clientele, and tonight we have the privilege of celebrating the occasion.  I could waste my time (and yours) by giving a most likely inadequate review here, laden with underwhelming vocabulary and confusing or inappropriate allusions, but I know better.  I shall leave that task to the better equipped–those who do the album the service it deserves.

So rather than try to steer your take on the album, I’ll just give you some simple procedural advice: consider purchasing a ticket for the show tonight. Openers Shit Horse and Light Pines dictate attention, regardless of the situation. (But is there a better situation than this? An almost certainly sold-out Cat’s Cradle, bursting at the seams for one of the Triangle’s most lauded outfits in recent memory? I lean toward no.)

Tonight promises to entertain, to satisfy, and to satiate. (Ok, so you did end up getting some underwhelming vocabulary.) Doors are at 8 and the show starts at 9.

Here on NC State’s campus, the atmosphere is pretty dreary right now, with exams looming overhead like ash from Eyjafjallajokull. (Too soon?)  This being the week before dead week, we’re all accepting caffeine intravenously and stuffing our gourds with useless information that we’ll remember just long enough to take the test (before it’s gone again, forever!)

But this Thursday offers a healthy reprieve from end-of-semester perils, with another great free Local Beer Local Band show featuring Kid Future and The Light Pines.

And what’s even better is that I’ll be interviewing both on Thursday evening from 7 to 8pm.

Kid Future has promised an in-studio performance, and The Light Pines may very well do the same, so be sure to tune in on 88.1 FM or at wknc.org/listen.

And I’d better see you out at Tir Na Nog with a local beer in your hand on Thursday night!

The semester is winding down here at NC State, and what better of a time to celebrate then this Thursday at Tir Na Nog and WKNCs Local Beer Local Band night? The Independent Weekly announced the line-up for its first Hopscotch Music Festival today.  The festival will take place in downtown Raleigh on September 9, 10 and 11 2010.
