Just an hour outside of Raleigh is the small, quiet town of Saxapahaw, NC. On April 17, it became the perfect stop on Alice Phoebe Lou’s “Oblivion North American Tour.” The South African-born, Berlin-based singer-songwriter brought her intimate and dreamy sound to one of North Carolina’s most unique venues.
Haw River Ballroom

Haw River Ballroom is a renovated historic venue that used to be a Dye House. It features three levels for viewing the stage along with large windows and an outdoor terrace. As the sun was setting, its rays shined through the glass creating a truly cinematic scene. Before the show, I had the chance to briefly chat with the venue owner Heather LaGarde about the building’s story. Each detail carried so much thought and intention. She was excited to show off recent updates to the lighting design during the show.
Alice Phoebe Lou arrived in Saxapahaw after performing in major cities along the east coast of Canada and the United States. LaGarde herself took Alice and her team onto the Haw River for a day of kayaking. A much needed change of pace and scenery from tour life.
John Andrews

The evening opened with a set from John Andrews, whose calm, stripped-down sound perfectly set the tone for the night.
Alice Phoebe Lou

Alice Phoebe Lou took the stage and floated between many instruments including the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, omnicord, keyboard, and piano. She played songs from her recent album “Oblivion” while sprinkling many of her past songs throughout.
The crowd was amazing, joining her in singing a cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” To end her set with “Witches” had everyone dancing out of the ballroom.

It was a magical night with Alice Phoebe Lou at Haw River Ballroom. The nature, food, and community in the Saxapahaw area make it feel so welcoming. I would consider it a must-visit venue, so let this be your sign to make the trip.
